Messengers Participant Emily, 2023

Messengers: Personal Mythology

EXHIBITION DATES: 17 November 2023 – 27 January 2024

OPENING: Wednesday 22 November, 5.30pm

Exhibition Statement:

Each and every one of us grapples with our own highly personal mythology – the psychic force that allows us to weave the fragments of our experience into a coherent story. With a basis in Jungian Psychoanalysis, the concept is understood as a constellation of beliefs, feelings, images, and rules that operate outside of our conscious awareness. These mythologies shape our every thought, perception, and action helping us to understand our identity, purpose, and direction in life. As humans, we are constantly creating new myths that allows us to cross the limits of what we currently consider possible. The creation of new myths can bring cohesion to the chaos of life and help us reach our full potential.

This exhibition is a glimpse into some of the past, current, and future myths of young artists in the program (aged between 9 and 25). They invite us to explore with them their journey of understanding and creative process through their work, as they reflect on where they have been, where they are now, and where they may be in times ahead. Personal Mythology is a diverse show exhibiting multi-media artforms while investigating identity, creativity and how works are informed by both the conscious and sub-conscious.

About the exhibitors:

Messengers is a non-clinical social support program for vulnerable young people and their families across the A.C.T. The program works with young people aged 9 – 25 who are experiencing mental ill-health, social isolation and a range of other issues. Offering weekly arts-based groups, participants are encouraged to develop new artistic skills and make social connections in a safe and inclusive environment. Messengers programs are specifically designed to improve psychological and social wellbeing via targeted participation in the arts.
